Valtrex FAQs

Valacyclovir (Valtrex) is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by herpes simplex virus (cold sores, genital herpes) and varicella zoster virus (shingles, chickenpox).

Valacyclovir starts working as soon as you take it. For cold sores, it can reduce the duration of the outbreak by about one day, with noticeable effects within 2-3 days. For shingles, it typically takes about 2 to 3 days to make a noticeable difference in symptoms.

It is generally advised to discuss the use of alcohol with your healthcare professional while taking Valacyclovir. When taken together, Valacyclovir and alcohol can increase symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, impaired judgment, and coordination problems.
