Januvia (sitagliptin) is commonly used with diet and exercise to help lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Januvia may also be used for other conditions as determined by your health care provider.
Januvia works to help keep your blood sugar levels from getting too high. Januvia blocks an enzyme called DPP-4. Blocking DPP-4 helps increase the levels of natural hormones in your body called incretins. Incretins help lower blood sugar by increasing insulin levels when blood sugar is high, especially after meals. They also decrease the amount of glucose (sugar) that is made by the liver.
Take Januvia exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed. You may take Januvia with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Januvia starts to work within a few hours, with noticeable improvements in blood glucose levels potentially seen within 1-2 weeks. Full effects may take 3 to 6 months.
The effects of Januvia last for approximately 24 hours, supporting its once-daily dosing regimen.

Common side effects of Januvia include upper respiratory tract infections (stuffy/runny nose, sore throat) and headaches. More serious, though rare, side effects can include pancreatitis, heart failure, and severe allergic reactions.
